What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Before you come

Bringing the right information makes the first visit far more useful. Where you have them, please bring:

• any referral letter, and letters from other doctors involved in your care
• previous scan reports and, if possible, the images themselves
• recent blood or urine test results, including PSA results with their dates
• a list of your medicines, including blood thinners, and any allergies
• your identification and insurance or guarantee letter details
• a note of your main symptoms, when they started, and what makes them better or worse

If you would like someone with you during the consultation, you are welcome to bring a family member or friend.

What the consultation involves

The appointment usually begins with a conversation about your symptoms, your general health and any previous treatment. Depending on the reason for the visit, an examination may be needed.

Tests that may be done on the day

Some simple tests are often available during or soon after the consultation, depending on the reason for referral:

• a urine test
• a urine flow measurement and a bladder scan for urinary symptoms
• an ultrasound scan of the kidneys, bladder or testicles
• blood tests, including PSA

Other tests, such as CT or MRI scans, cystoscopy or a prostate biopsy, are arranged separately. Their purpose and what they involve are explained on the procedures pages.

Languages

Consultations are available in English and Bahasa Malaysia.

What happens afterwards

At the end of the appointment you should know what the likely diagnosis is or what needs to be ruled out, which tests come next and why, and when you will hear about the results.

Costs and insurance

Consultation and procedure charges are billed by Subang Jaya Medical Centre. The hospital can provide an estimate before a planned procedure, and if you are using insurance, the hospital will help with the pre-authorisation process. Please check with your insurer what your policy covers.

Booking an appointment

From 4 January 2027, appointments can be made online through SJMC, by phone, or through the contact page. Enquiries and January appointments are welcome now. Referrals from doctors are welcome, and you may also book directly yourself.
