Who charges for what

Care at a private hospital is billed in parts: the hospital charges for the room, theatre, nursing, imaging, laboratory tests and any implants or consumables; the surgeon and anaesthetist charge professional fees; and medicines are billed separately. Fees for professional services in Malaysia follow the schedule set out in the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act regulations.

Getting an estimate

For a planned procedure, Subang Jaya Medical Centre can prepare a written estimate in advance. An estimate is based on an expected length of stay and the usual course of recovery, so the final bill can differ if more time or additional treatment is needed.

If you are using insurance

Most private insurers require pre-authorisation, arranged through the hospital, usually with a guarantee letter before admission. It is worth checking with your insurer:

• whether the procedure and the use of robotic surgery are covered by your policy
• your annual and lifetime limits, and any co-payment or deductible
• whether there is a waiting period for the condition, or any exclusion for a pre-existing condition
• what is covered for follow-up visits, scans and medicines after discharge
• whether a second opinion consultation is covered

If you are paying yourself

Ask for the estimate in writing, check what it includes and excludes, and ask what would change it. The hospital billing office can explain payment arrangements.

Questions to ask at your appointment

• What does the recommended procedure involve, and what are the alternatives?
• How long would I expect to stay in hospital?
• What follow-up will I need, and over what period?
• Who should I contact if a problem arises after discharge?
